The Ontario Appaloosa Horse Association (OAHA) will be hosting two shows in 2012 that will be offering Open All Breed classes in addition to a full class list for Appaloosas registered with the Appaloosa Horse Club (USA) and the Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada (ApHCC)..

Middlesex Appaloosa Challenge & All Breed Show

June 23 & 24, Ilderton Fair Agriplex, Ilderton, ON

Gold Rush Appaloosa Classic & All Breed Show

July 14 & 15, Fletcher’s Horse World, Waterford, ON

Both shows will offer a full slate of English and Western classes as well as high point overall awards for the weekend.  Stalls will be available onsite for a fee for those exhibitors wishing to stable overnight.

1. Each club is allowed to send one team of up to 14 riders total. Horse/rider combo is not deciding factor so the team may have 14 riders and more than 14 horses.
2. each club can send two riders per class
3. the horse/rider combo must be the same all year. No substitutions of horse to rider or rider to horse
4. Midwest rules apply/ judge’s decision is final
   1. Nrha rules apply to reining class
   2. Rusty gaits bylaws apply (jr’s must wear helmets)
5. entry fee of $5.00 per class/per combo, paid by competitor day of show

President’s Message:

Hello everyone. It has been a long winter and spring doesn’t seem to be much better at this point, horses haven’t shed out and yet we are less than two weeks from our first show. May 15 is the first RGSC show of the season.

Show dates: May 15, June 19, July 17, August 14 and September 18. Look forward to seeing everyone soon. I would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out for the spring cleanup on April 17.

We, the executive, would like to bring to everyone’s attention a few new things offered this year. First order of business is that payback will be offered in random classes throughout the show season. By the end of the season every class will receive pay out. Hopefully this will entice everyone to come out and we will show appreciation to you for supporting Rusty Gaits.

The next item of interest is the Paris Youth Show. We would like to offer this opportunity to anyone interested. We need to know your interest on or before the first show in order to start the planning for fund-raising and putting teams together. The dates for the Paris Youth Show are July 30 and 31, 2011. This shop is open to competitors on a horse from ages 4 to 18. Please contact Chanda Burke @ 461-9205 or Tracy Haines @ 232-4606 or by e-mail so we can set up a meeting for all interested.

This year’s Championship Show will be a little different than previous years. The show will allow for more competitors in each class and reward the overall team. We are hoping that our members will help us find sponsorships in order to make this the best show yet. We will have a document prepared that can be presented to potential sponsors so they know what they are sponsoring and what they will get from the sponsorship. As incentive we will enter each person who hands in a sponsor to us in a draw for a prize to be awarded later in the show season.

Looking forward to seeing everyone May 15 as we start another great year at the Rusty Gaits Saddle Club.

Congratulations!

Patrick DeHetre is fifteen years old and attends Sir George Ross Secondary School in London. Patrick has successfully eaned his Equine Canada Western Learn to Ride Level 1 and is currently working towards passing level 2. Patrick has competed successfully over the past 2 years at local stable shows and is now focusing on competing in western speed events. Patrick is currently working with his coach (Chanda Burke) to train her filly in preparation of competing this spring.

Way to go!

Trader Days Re-visited.

February 19 saw the annual Trader Days get-together at the Eden and Area Community Centre. 21 tables displayed an assortment of clothing, tack, horse brasses, baking, handcrafts and lots of other items. It is billed as a ‘horsey garage sale’ and that it was! The vendors seemed pleased with their sales and we had a steady flow of lookers/buyers from 8:30 a.m. until a bit after noon. Chanda Burke brought some of her older students (our Junior A competitors) and they helped vendors set up and carry out their goods and ran the food booth. Thanks to all those energetic and helpful students who helped out that day. Much appreciated by all! We made a small profit, and there was a lot of visiting going on, for sure. Sort of like a tiny Quarterama of years gone by. The hall is booked for 2012 and the date to remember is February 18.

Welcome back to our California Snowbirds – Vic & Julie Robinson. Also welcome to Noreen and Frank Whelihan, from near Waterford. Friends of mine met them in Arizona this past January and her husband and Frank worked together several years ago. Small world indeed. Our Spring ???? Trail Ride is on May 7 at Walker’s on Richmond. A report will be in the next newsletter. Notices were e-mailed on May 2 to all members and associates. Special thanks to Jon Walker and Family & Val Anger for allowing us to use his facility and their properties.

The marking crew, headed by Sue Koost, dodged a lot of raindrops as of this writing. Lynn Johnston, Bev Perry, Marlene Weber and 3 other friends went cruising in February and picked an excellent week to catch some rays (bitterly cold here), and Lynn has been travelling ever since – Disney World for March Break and just recently, to Holland. Where next? Christy McMullen is recovering from successful knee surgery.

All regular club shows start at 9:30 A.M. Please allow lots of time to arrive, make your entries, ready yourself and your equine partner, study the patterns if applicable and a hundred other little things.. The first show is always a challenge for the Show Secretaries, as well as competitors both new and experienced. This year we have a new entry system. Please download the membership form from the website and fill in all pertinent info correctly. Your full 911 land address necessary, as well as your e-mail address.

Classes for the Beginner Rider are a walk/jog/trot class, Horsemanship and Showmanship. This replaces the former open walk/jog/trot class.

The RGSC AGM was held at the Pillar & Post in Springfield and saw a capacity crowd. Lots of good discussion. Many came for brunch and all were very pleased. Our waitress Helga kept the coffee and ice water coming all afternoon, at no charge to the club. Much appreciated.

Parelli demonstration on Friday, May 13 at The 17 Ranch, 154483 15^th Line, R. R. 3, Ingersoll. This is near Thamesford. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the demo will start at 7 p.m. Don Halladay is the chief presenter. A $20.00 donation is requested. For more info, check out www.toddowens.com.

The Paris Youth Show will be held over the Civic Holiday week-end at the Paris Fairgrounds. There will be a meeting at the May show to find out who is interested in representing the Rusty Gaits Saddle Club at this very prestigious event.

May 28 at Walker’s Ranch on Richmond Road, the Ontario Reined Cow Horse Association is hosting a reining clinic with Gene Munger, a well-known trainer from Michigan Contact Sherry Black at 200-9475 or portia040@yahoo.ca or Craig Black at 874-1294 for further details. Even if you are not interested in showing reining, this will help to put a better handle on your horse for trail riding or whatever your discipline of choice and will make that experience way more enjoyable.

Canada’s Outdoor Equine Expo, June 10 ~12. This is the first year for this event – lots of different clinics and demos ranging from eventing to driving heavy horses, plus Craig Cameron’s Extreme Cowboy Race, as seen on RFD TV. Check out their website at www.equineexpo.ca for a schedule and so forth. This is being held at Iron Horse Equestrian Complex, close to Burlington and Milton. Check them out at www.IronHorseEquestrian.ca. Looks like a fun and educational outing. Hope it’s dry!

Met some folks at Trader Days who supply rubber stall mats, and all sorts of fencing equipment and they even install your fencing for you. Check out Dave or Liz Martin 586-2115 or 276-2212. They’re from Clear Creek (local).

Cactus, Cattle & Cowboys Western Festival is July 16 in West Lorne. Lots of activity going on, including a Volunteer Firemans’ breakfast, demonstrations of horse shoeing and other horse related fun and educational stuff to see and do. High Noon is the equid parade through town. New this year is the ‘Battle of the Bands’. Trail ride at Mel and Sophie Gowan’s, just west of Wallacetown for an overnight campout, breakfast the next morning, another trail ride and a meal. No charge for this but a generous donation to the Trans Canada trail is much appreciated. G.R.E.A.T (Goshen Ridge Equine Association of Tillsonburg) show dates are: May 8, June 12, July 2, July 10, August 14 and September 11. Rain date-September 17 Shows start at 9 a.m. and they are located on Bell Mill Road, just south of Hwy 3 outside of Tillsonburg. Website is www.goshenridge.com

SATURDAY May 7, Spring Trail Ride at Walker’s Ranch, 8237 Richmond Road.

Start about noon and ride a well-marked gentle trail through wooded areas and around fields. Length is 2 hours or so.

Join in for a meal at the community table in the cook shack following the ride. Time to meet, eat and greet for supper is approximately 3 p.m. or so

Please bring your plates, cutlery and beverage of choice, if it’s not coffee or bottled water.

$5.00 to ride and $5.00 to eat.

Memberships will be available the day of the ride.

You must be a member of RGSC in order to ride.  An OEF membership is highly recommended, but not required.  Day memberships are $5.00.
